The Problem

A raw clay bank against the basement door

Paint marks laying out the wall line.

In September 2026 the back of this new home in Gainesboro had a raw bank of red clay, about 8 feet tall, cut right against the walkout basement door. Nothing was holding it back. Water stood in the low spot by the door, and a clay cut like that washes down a little more with every hard rain.

The paint marks lay out where the wall would go: an L shape that wraps the corner beside the basement door.

The Build

How we built it

  1. Dug down and built the pad. We dug to grade and compacted a crushed-stone leveling pad under the whole wall.
  2. Buried the first course. The bottom row of blocks sits a foot below finished grade, so the ground in front locks the base of the wall in place.
  3. Set the blocks by machine. We set Redi-Rock® big blocks with our own mini excavator, turning the corner beside the basement door. The wall stands on its own weight, with no reinforcing grid buried back into the yard.
  4. Built in the drainage. Clean #57 stone behind the wall, the full height, wrapped in filter fabric, with a 4-inch perforated drain at the base that runs to daylight.
  5. Cleaned up. About a week on site, then cleanup.
